< Back to Rick's Typings of Famous People: Home

My typings are divided into "Sure," "Pretty sure," and "I have an opinion" based on how certain of the typing I am.

Contents

[edit] Sure

[edit] Chris Langan

American thinker, "smartest man on Earth."

Read:

[edit] Ayn Rand

Thinker and author of The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged and other books.

I used to consider Ayn Rand ILE, but have since changed my opinion after reading We the Living, watching the movie The Passion of Ayn Rand, and reading Nathaniel Branden's essay "The Benefits and Hazards of the Philosophy of Ayn Rand" (all highly recommended). I have also watched her interview with Mike Wallace. I think LSI fits very well.

Fundamental traits of Ayn Rand are:

  • an absolute conviction in her ability to arrive at correct conclusions via reason alone
  • a rejection of sentimentality and a refusal to let feelings influence judgments and decisions; a framing of all decisions in the language of reason, even if the decisions are fundamentally based on passions
  • absolute conviction and absolute clarity of opinions, the flipside of which was deafness to other people's philosophical and personal backgrounds, an unability to understand where people are coming from
  • intellectual restrictiveness, lack of interest in and mistrust of objects too far distant from her primary philosophical tenets
  • overbearingness and authoritarianism in practice, even as she rejected authoritarianism as a political system

Although some of her works conveyed the value of rugged individualism (e.g. We the Living), Rand was ultimately more effective at getting people to think her way than at getting them to be individualists. Thus, she essentially created a cult of personality formed of people who echoed her ego-centristic philosophy yet were psychologically dependent upon Rand (herein lies the irony).

Rand was a capitalist philosophically, but not at all an American capitalist, much less a "corporate woman." To place her in the Gamma Quadra because of a perceived fixation with money and profit would be a great mistake. Her fixation was with her system of ideas and her writings, which happened to deal philosophically with the subjects of the pursuit of self interest vs. the pursuit of the common good for moral reasons. Her life in no way was an embodiment of the pursuit of money and material gain.

In brief, the reason ILE does not fit for Rand is that a continued search for new, interesting sources of information and insight was definitely not part of her personality. Her philosophy was one that narrowed the search vastly rather than expanded it, and she did not give others the room to perform their own search, unless their conclusions immediately matched hers.

The reason LII does not fit is that she was too forceful and overbearing in real life. Some of this comes across in her written language, which is stark and "manly." She actively quelched dissent among her circle of students and pursued absolute certainty rather than letting questions hang in the air without answers.

The reason SLE does not fit is that leading     would have made Rand much more changeable, susceptible to spontaneous irrational impulses, and more aware of and in tune with the natural, biological drives underpinning behavior, such as the will to dominate or the desire to do things simply because one desires it and not because it follows from reason. She also probably would have been more focused on getting things done and relatively less focused on the integrity of her ideas themselves. As an example, Lenin (SLE) modified communist ideas in the course of practice, allowing for some private ownership, and warned of being "too idealistic" (i.e. more focused on ideas than on what is possible in practice). This kind of pragmatism was foreign to Rand, who was always most concerned about the ideas foremost (living a life of pure reason).

No     types fit for Rand because her entire worldview was derived from reason inside herself rather than from "findings" and "experience" in the outside world. Her focus was on ideas themselves - the mental mechanisms employed within the intellect - not on how reality operates. The process of formulating views/judgments/opinions was more important to her than the process of gathering experience and data.

No ethical types fit for obvious reasons. She never tried to make people feel good or reach them on a personal level. She was ruthless in her exercise of reason. She lacked both an intuitive and a scientific understanding of human psychology.

[edit] Joseph Stalin

Soviet General Secretary.

Intertype relations:

  • Lenin (SLE): mirror // The two worked together closely.
  • Nadezhda Krupskaya (ILI)

[edit] Pretty sure

[edit] Charles Bronson

American actor.

[edit] Hillary Rodham Clinton

American politician.

Watch:

Intertype relations:

  • Bill Clinton (ESE): partial duality // The two are loyal to each other, but many see theirs as a 'marriage of convenience.'
  • Barack Obama (IEI): activation // Political rivalry seems to have given way to at least a semblance of friendship

[edit] Sean Connery

Scottish actor.

Intertype relations:

  • Catherine Zeta-Jones (LSI): identity // Two main characters of movie Entrapment. Both were tough, sensual, but almost heartless, and were intended to appear similar in personality.
  • Harrison Ford (SLI): quasi-identical // Played together in Indiana Jones. Father (Connery) was distant from son (Ford), and they had difficulty connecting.

[edit] James Hetfield

American rock musician and singer (Metallica).

Intertype relations:

  • Metallica members: seems to be a Beta-dominated band.

[edit] Saddam Hussein

Former president of Iraq.

[edit] Jennifer Jason Leigh

American actress.

Intertype relations:

  • Rutger Hauer (SLE): mirror // The two have played in a few movies together, including a couple in Flesh and Blood.

[edit] Demi Moore

American actress.

Intertype relations:

  • Patrick Swayze (EIE): duality // Starred together in Ghost, presenting a convincing love story as a romantic couple. Many viewers noted their fantastic chemistry.
  • Ashton Kutcher (EIE): duality // Married couple.

[edit] Vladimir Putin

Former Russian President, now Prime Minister.

LII is only other serious possibility.

Intertype relations:

  • Boris Yeltsin (SLE): mirror // Yeltsin chose Putin as his successor after going through quite a few other options.
  • Mikhail Saakashvili (SEE): supervision // Putin has a strong personal dislike of S.
  • Alexander Lukashenko (LSI or SLE): identity or mirror // Putin feels competition with Lukashenko.

[edit] Catherine Zeta-Jones

Welsh actress.

Intertype relations:

  • Sean Connery (LSI): identity // Two main characters of movie Entrapment. Both were tough, sensual, but almost heartless, and were intended to appear similar in personality.

[edit] I have an opinion

[edit] Lance Armstrong

American professional cyclist.

[edit] Monica Belucci

Italian actress and model.

Reminiscent of Catherine Zeta-Zones.

[edit] Russell Crowe

New Zealand-Australian actor.

[edit] Matt Damon

American actor.

Logic self-evident. Sensing a little less so. Seems tough and always collected, suggesting    . Subdued responses. Always has solid poses with little gesticulation. Does not seem relaxed unless he is made to laugh. This goes against the possibility of an     type, as do the intertype relations.

Watch:

Intertype relations:

  • Ben Affleck (EIE): duality // Best friends and film collaborators.
  • Sarah Silverman (EIE): duality // Released video about how they were sleeping together (not seriously though). This suggests a friendly relationship.
  • Robin Williams (ESE): semi-duality // Starred in film together.
  • Matthew McConaughey (ESE): semi-duality // They used to hang out together when they were "broke actors." Now Damon does a very good impersonation of Matthew.
  • Jimmy Kimmel (SLE): mirror // The two have a long-standing comic rivalry (not serious — read here), suggesting some sort of easygoing socionic relationship

[edit] Vicente Fox

Former president of Mexico.

[edit] Clark Gable

American actor.

[edit] Anna Kournikova

Russian tennis player and model.

[edit] Till Lindemann

German singer (Rammstein).

Intertype relations:

  • Rammstein members: seems like a Beta-dominant band.

[edit] Alexander Lukashenko

President of Belarussia.

SLE only other serious possibility.

Intertype relations:

  • Vladimir Putin (LSI): duality or mirror.

[edit] Phil McGraw

American talk show host ("Dr. Phil").

Intertype relations:

  • Oprah (EIE): duality // Oprah found Dr. Phil fascinating and helped him launch his career.

[edit] Nikita Mikhalkov

Russian filmmaker and actor.

[edit] Nancy Reagan

Wife of former U.S. President.

Clearly an introverted and sensing type. Doting and possessive wife. "Nancy Reagan strongly influenced Reagan's image as president, both with her role as a devoted wife and with her personal managerial style, the latter dismissed by critics as extravagant and autocratic" [1].

Intertype relations:

  • Ronald Reagan (EIE): duality // The two had a famously close, supportive, and self-contained relationship. A dual relationship if there ever was one. "Daughter Maureen, by Ronald's first marriage, has said they were 'totally self-contained,' never needing anyone but each other" (referring to Ronald and Nancy).

[edit] Steven Seagal

American actor, martial artist, musician.

[edit] Patrick Stewart

English actor (famous for Star Trek).

Intertype relations:

  • Whoopi Goldberb (EIE): duality // The two are good friends, and Goldberg frequently appeared on Star Trek.
