The Enneagram keeps coming up everywhere. I don't dig the system much, but I've finally looked into all the types and tried to make sense of it.

[edit] Self-typing

Based on the descriptions at the Enneagram "Institute", here is how much I can identify with the different types:

1: Probably 80%. This type captures something very important about me — a sense of mission and the internal imperative to be doing things that are important to the world. Morality is not as important to me as in description, nor is "being good" or "having integrity." Those things seem a bit off.

2: 10%. Definitely not me. I'm too aloof and indifferent towards most people, much more caught up in my own pursuits.

3: Maybe 60%. Correct: drivenness, industry, development of talent and potential, need for recognition. Incorrect: losing my sense of self because of achievement (I'm too self-absorbed to for this). Also, do not pursue conventional paths of achievement.

4: About 40-50%. Correct: introspective, self-awareness, some sense of awkwardness. Incorrect: low self-esteem, waiting for others to enter life, etc. I am more self-assured and take much more initiative than description suggests.

5: About 70%. This type captures my searching intellect and desire to figure things out, to always be learning, to get intellectually engrossed easily, and to identify oneself as someone who always has something insightful to say. However, the fears don't seem correct for me, or the tendency to retreat into the intellect. I am more adventurous and not so chained to my logical mind as to be unable to deal with the real world.

6: Haha, no. 10% at most.

7: Haha, yes. 90%. Without reservation, this is a pretty decent description of me, touching on things that have been real problems in my life. Also, the motivations and fears seem right on, more or less.

8: About 30-40%. The rugged individualism is accurate, but many other details are not.

9: About 40%. Captures some of my peacemaking abilities, but after reading the other descriptions, the motivations, tendencies, fears discussed here do not match well.

[edit] Conclusions

Types I am like in order of most to least. "//" separates types I identify with somewhat to those I do not identify with at all: 7, 1, 5, 3, 4, 9, 8 // 2, 6

Conclusion: Type 7 fits best. If I had to put a "wing" on that, it would be 7w1 — adventure, discovery, and being able to do everything on the one hand, and a sense of mission on the other. That combination captures essential aspects of my personality pretty well. None of the even-numbered types fit well, esp. 6 or 8, so an adjacent wing seems impossible. Since I don't care much for Enneagram theory, I don't care that my wing isn't adjacent. 7w1 would be the most accurate description.
