Quadra
From Wikisocion
A quadra is a group of four socionic types that have the same valued elements (i.e. the same elements as their 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th functions). The same intertype relations exist between the types of any quadra: identity, duality, activation, and mirror. These relations are generally favorable, with types sharing similar or compatible strivings, unspoken values, and expectations for interaction. The socion contains four quadras:
Accurate descriptions of quadras are difficult, as each quadra description must find some commonality among four types that collectively represent all four temperaments and two different clubs. Because the shared quadra values are abstract, quadra descriptions typically rely on presumed shared beliefs and interests. All the general problems of type diagnosis apply as well.

[edit] Quadra values

The term quadra values is often used in socionics — for example, "LIIs have as a quadra value." This means the type has that element in its Ego or Super-Id block. In practical terms it means that a type is comfortable using an information element, and feels better when information of its kind is being exchanged.
A possible explanation for quadra values comes from the fact that the valued elements are either in the ego functions, which are conscious and strong, or the Super-Id functions, which are unconscious and weak. Because one naturally likes to have conscious control in the area of their strengths, the ego functions are valued. Similarly, because conscious engagement of one's weaknesses is painful, the conscious Super-Ego functions are subdued, and the unconscious super-id functions valued. This is directly related to the idea of complementarity, which implies that duals allow the best possible environment for each other to develop their strengths, and at the same time, support their weaknesses in a healthy way.
Quadra values are best understood in terms of preference, and are by definition unrelated to strength. For instance, a type with in their Ego will necessarily have in their Id and therefore be quite confident in both, but when there is a choice in priority, that type will tend to prefer to use over . A type of the same quadra, but without sensing in the Ego, will likewise prefer over but will not be particularly confident in either, so welcoming help from others on issues far more than over issues.
Here is how each element manifests itself as a quadra value:
[edit] Valued extroverted intuition
Types that value prefer to try out an opportunity rather than consider all possible ways in which it could not work out. They pick a few options and stick with them, in contrast to types who pick one option and continue to doubt that option.
They enjoy discussing unusual insights into the nature of the world and crazy out-there ideas, like space elevators. Typical quadra humor juxtaposes seemingly unrelated phenomena.
[edit] Valued introverted intuition
Types that value always like to have in mind a specific plan for how their life will develop in the future. Thus they have little time for the concept of "living for the moment" or "making the best of the present". They generally engage in pure leisure activities only for short periods of time, and even then their leisure activities generally involve a psychologically demanding or competitive aspect.
[edit] Valued extroverted sensing
Types that value are much more comfortable with direct (sometimes abrasive) behavior aimed at making an immediate impact. There is usually a competitive edge to this style of group interaction, resulting in a more intense atmosphere than that of valuing quadras. They appreciate contemplating possibilities only if they feel like they stand to gain something from it, or it has a perceived potential impact on "the real world".
[edit] Valued introverted sensing
Types that value prefer to spend their time doing enjoyable activities rather than straining themselves to achieve goals. They like to believe that if activities are done with enjoyment, people will give them more effort and time, and also becoming more skilled at what they are doing in the long run. They believe that goals should suit people's intrinsic needs rather than shaped by the demands and constraints of the external world, and so do not try to force others into doing things they don't want to do. They also try to be easygoing and pleasant, preferring peaceful coexistence to conflict, except when their personal well-being or comfort is directly at stake.
[edit] Valued extroverted logic
Types that value tend to focus on worthwhile or beneficial activity (what is beneficial depends on the individual). They reject the idea that certain things can be analyzed, on the principle that it is not beneficial or worthwhile to do so. An example of this would be use of socionics in business: although socionics does reflect how people act, actually using it beneficially in a business environment is difficult and overly complex, wasting effort and time on something that might not even make money.
They also do not like concepts or ideals that are not practical or reflective of how the world works.
[edit] Valued introverted logic
Types that value naturally question the consistency of beliefs that are taken for granted in everyday life. They strongly prefer to make decisions based on their own experience and judgement, as opposed to relying on external authorities for knowledge, which they use only as a last resort. They also have respect for people with clearly defined and internally consistent opinions, believing that a sense of internal certainty is necessary for orienting oneself in life. To these types, one's personal standards of truth are more reliable than public consensus.
They see overly pragmatic views as shallow, and try to limit public discussion of mundane practical matters. They are especially sensitive to redundant information.
They enjoy talking about theoretical topics and analyzing everyday things for fun.
[edit] Valued extroverted ethics
Types that value like creating a visible atmosphere of camaraderie with other people. They enjoy a loose atmosphere where anything goes, where people don't have to watch too carefully what they say for fear of offending others. This means these types try not to be too thin-skinned, taking jokes with a grain of salt.
However, they are very conscious of the fact that the way something is said is very important to how it will be received, so they tend to add emphasis, embellishments, and exaggerations here and there to keep people engaged. The best way to say something is highly dependent on the situation and the implied purpose of the exchange, so of course levity is not appropriate in some situations.
Even after explosive arguments, these types find it hard to hold grudges, and can tolerate people they (in principle) don't like, as long as the situation is primarily social and doesn't require too close contact. They prefer misgivings to be out in the open; they believe that the silent treatment is one of the worst things you can do to a person, and only aggravates the underlying problem.
[edit] Valued introverted ethics
Types with valued strive to make and maintain close, personal relationships with their friends and family. They value sensitivity to others' feelings, and occasionally will make their innermost feelings and sentiments known in order to test the possibility of creating closeness with others.
Also, these types convey emotions in terms of how they were affected by something (such as "I did not like that"), rather than an approach that would describe the object itself without clear reference to the subject involved (such as "That sucked"). Much of their decisions are based on how they themselves (or others in relation to them personally) feel in contrast to considering how "the big picture" is affected (like groups of people).
[edit] Stages of life metaphor
Often the quadras are linked, in order, with four general stages of life:
| Alpha | childhood |
| Beta | adolescence |
| Gamma | adulthood |
| Delta | old age |
This metaphor describes the quadras at a more general level than value dichotomies. In particular group behavior very often follows the pattern: the curiosity and frivolousness of Alphas, the iconoclastic tendencies of Betas, the industry and conservatism of Gammas, and the balanced and detached pragmatism of Deltas.
