Functions:
Each of the following locations represents a function in the socionic model of the psyche. The first and second functions define the type name and determine the content of all the other functions.
So, for example, the type to the right has introverted ethics as its first function and extraverted intuition as its second. That makes it an ethical intuitive introvert, or EII ('Humanist').

Three-letter type names:
The first letter is the first function or, more correctly, the information element that is processed by the first function (I = intuition, S = sensing, L = logics, E = ethics). Whether this function is introverted or extraverted is indicated by the third letter (E = extraverted, I = introverted). The second letter represents the second function, which is always introverted if the first is extraverted and vice-versa.
So, for example, 'ESE' = 'Ethical sensing extravert, 'LSI' = 'Logical sensing introvert, and so on.
* NOTE: sometimes the terms 'extratim' and 'introtim' are used instead of 'extravert' and 'introvert' to avoid confusion with the prevailing definitions of these terms used in modern psychology. 'TIM' stands for 'type of information metabolism.' I have decided for now to stick with the 'vert' versions. "TIM" is being used more and more in Russian socionics to replace the word "type."
Where do the type names come from? (i.e. "Mediator," "Guardian," etc.)
These names are translations of Viktor Gulenko's Russian type names, which have become the most popular set of type names in the Russian speaking world, aside from the historic pseudonyms (such as "Don Quixote," "Maxim Gorky," etc.) which I refrain from using in English-language socionics. |
