Jane Fonda

American actress, activist, writer, and fitness guru
EIE (Actor)
Джейн Фонда

Observations:
Energetically promotes the different causes she believes in: protesting against war in Vietnam and Iraq, promoting aerobics and the healthy lifestyle, preaching feminism and women's rights. She is good at speaking passionately to crowds, but is rather aloof, though charming, one-on-one.

Videos:
Interview with Barbara Walters (ESI?)
Includes a clip of her most memorable movie roles, where she is almost always displaying dramatic, contrasting emotions and passions and directing her emotional displays at someone else.

Fonda has a raw, edgy voice. Her body is stiff, wiry, and high-strung. Barbara Walters, by comparison, keeps all her thoughts to herself and talks in a sweet, understanding voice, keeping the energy level down and the atmosphere intimate. In several places Barbara Walters asks Fonda what she "feels" about certain things. Fonda evades the "feeling" part and talks about her observations.

When talking about the cause of her strained relationship with her daughter, she says that she was at home but was never "there." She was "outside of herself," out there doing something in the world that had no relation to herself, her soul, her inner interests, etc. What she did for her daughter was organize her external activities (her own words), but she did not give her focused attention. That to me sounds totally extraverted.

When Fonda asked her daughter to film a short movie about her life, her daughter replied, "why don't you just put a chameleon on the lens and let it walk around." "Ouch," Fonda says to Barbara Walters, "that really hurt." The sense of being a chameleon and lacking an inner "core" (which she claims to have finally found through religion and spirituality) is typical of many EIEs.

Steve Vai

American guitarist and composer
EIE (Actor)
Стив Вай

Observations:
Highly animate, pliable face with wide, expressive mouth. Somewhat feminine features.

Comments:
Vai is one of the most (if not the most) technically proficient guitarists in the world. He uses many crazy sound effects and loves flashy, exaggerated acting. His music focuses on showcasing the sound quality of the guitar, which imitates all sorts of different sounds. Harmony and composition structure are also dealt with well, but they are not emphasized. Coherent structure and clear harmonic development is more important to Joe Satriani, whose guitar playing is less expressive and flashy.

Videos:
Music sample 1: "Tender Surrender"
Note how Vai reflects the mood of the music through his body much more so than most guitarists. Watch his hilarious facial expressions and antics.
Music sample 2: "Bad Horsie"
More funny acting as he creates the musical image of a "bad horsie."
Radio interview
Steve Vai demonstrating how he works in his studio (very good)
Note his emotionality

Andrei Tarkovsky

Russian film director
EIE (Actor)
Alternatives: don't know
Андрей Тарковский

Observations:
The best set of photos of Tarkovsky is here. We see that he is an animate, dynamic person.

Here are some short videos of Tarkovsky: 1, 2, and 3. Tarkovsky demonstrates a voice tember and speaking style typical of many EIEs, with a sort of raspy, tight voice quality with an element of negativism.

Comments:
Interestingly, Tarkovsky has been typed as an SLI by a few Russian socionists, though he did not make it into the Celebrity Benchmark List. Perhaps there was some copycat typing going on. In typing Tarkovsky as SLI, they have emphasized the aesthetic nature of his shots. However, Tarkovsky's aesthetics, though profound, never existed by themselves (i.e. purely for the sake of aesthetic enjoyment), but where always used to convey symbolic meaning that was more important than the beauty of the shot itself.

From Wikipedia we read:

Tarkovsky's films are characterised by Christian and metaphysical themes, extremely long takes, and memorable images of exceptional beauty. Recurring motifs in his films are dreams, memory, childhood, running water accompanied by fire, rain indoors, reflections, and characters re-appearing in the foreground of long panning movements of the camera.

In bold are shown typical introverted intuition themes. Tarkovsky's films give continual special attention to the passage of time:

Tarkovsky developed a theory of cinema that he called "sculpting in time". By this he meant that the unique characteristic of cinema as a medium was to take our experience of time and alter it. Unedited movie footage transcribes time in real time. (The speedy jump-cutting style that is prevalent in music videos and many Hollywood movies, by contrast, overrides any sense of time by imposing the editor's viewpoint.) By using long takes and few cuts in his films, he aimed to give the viewers a sense of time passing, time lost, and the relationship of one moment in time to another.

A few minutes of any Tarkovsky film will confirm this emphasis on the drama of each moment of time, with very ample silence, slow camera pans, and a sense of mystery and soulfulness.

My limited experience suggests that SLIs don't tend to appreciate Tarkovsky because of the suspenseful emotionality and excessive symbolism and the "pretentious" monologues, while IEIs and EIEs love him.

Oprah Winfrey

American talk show host
EIE (Actor)
Alternatives: ESE, SEE
Опра Уинфри

Observations:
Warm and bubbly. Open, sincere, and unassuming. Lively, informative facial expressions. Accepting and nonjudgmental. Spontaneous and uninhibited.
*NOTE: I'm not sure the description above places the correct emphasis!

Additional comments:
Oprah Winfrey uses her talk show to educate her audience by showing surprising new facets of people's lives and relationships. She is skilled at making people feel comfortable and accepted and getting them to open up and reveal their true selves. She strives to teach people to understand and accept the truth — as painful as it may be — and leads the way by baring her own self, her experiences and motives as if the audience were her best friend. She creates situations where people will stumble upon the truth about themselves on their own. She is very smart and can be quite serious, but she is able to treat each guest as an equal, no matter what their status in everyday life.
*NOTE: I'm not sure the description above places the correct emphasis!

I expect to investigate EIE more as a possibility for Oprah. Her husband and Phil McGraw, whom she helped promote, both look like LSIs. I might have misinterpreted Oprah through my lack of viewing experience. [7/12]

[11/2] I have changed my mind and now believe Oprah to be an EIE. It seems her emphasis is more on people and emotional interaction than on insight and generating new perspectives. Plus, her partner, Stedman Graham, seems to be a LSI, as is her protege Dr. Phil. And her circle of friends seems to have little in common with Delta Quadra.

Steve Jobs

Founder of Apple Computers
EIE (Actor)
Стив Джобс

Comments:
Highly animate, persuasive, charismatic, visionary, motivational, and dramatic. Likes attention and posing for the camera. Has a carefully crafted persona and frequently changes his appearance. Has an autocratic streak and foists his tastes and mindset on others. Here is an interesting quote about Jobs' visionary qualities:

Jobs is both admired and criticized for his consummate skills of persuasion and salesmanship, which has been dubbed the "reality distortion field" (visit this link!) and is particularly evident during his keynote speeches at Macworld Expos [Wikipedia].

This distortion effect comes from dishing out vision with a powerful emotional (even hypnotic) component. It causes people to have unwavering faith in what is "supposed" to happen and do whatever it takes to get there.

Sigmund Freud

Austrian psychologist
EIE (Actor)
Alternatives: ILE, LII
Зигмунд Фрейд

Comments:
I am going against the widely accepted socionic typing of Freud, which is ILE. I think Freud was an ethical type, and I cannot see him as ILE. I see an outward resemblance to ILE, but I think the arguments against ILE are too significant to accept this version.

I don't find the argument that he created a new theoretical system strong enough to assume he was ILE, especially since this system was of a psychological or humanitarian nature and not in the physical sciences or philosophy. Freud's thinking left its mark "in the popular imagination... while also making a long-lasting impact on fields as diverse as literature, film, marxist and feminist theories, literary criticism, philosophy, and of course, psychology" (Wikipedia). I do not think that Freud's ideas were structured in a extraverted intuitionintroverted logic manner or left a typically extraverted intuitionintroverted logic impact on the world. In addition, Freud's ideas are essentially about human passions, repressed desires, and unconscious conflicts. These are best described as a reflection of extraverted ethics or introverted ethics. Freud himself studied this aspect of his own functioning in particular.

I don't think an ILE would be able to receive psychoanalysis patients day in and day out over a span of decades without getting terribly bored and switching to more theoretical activities not requiring direct day-to-day application.

... to be continued ... (8/3/2006)

- A strip of pictures of Freud.

Discussion:

>> I think you should consider Freud's being a LII. Just try it and you'll probably like it.

I will think about it when I come across more info about Freud's life. This is not one of the typings I'm confident about.
